Heart and Lung disease are the number one health concerns of our membership
Your Board believes that a proactive initiative would help the membership in identifying the early stages of many of these diseases. 

The goal of your trustees is to address these issues before they become problems and there are more victims. To that end we are proposing a health screening exam for all active members. 

Your union has negotiated a substantial reduction in the cost of these tests with Inner Imaging, P.C. Inner Imaging is an affiliate of the Heart Institute at Beth Israel Medical Center. In this arrangement your out-of-pocket cost will be $375 for all four tests. The retail cost of these tests is between $850 and $2,000.

The screening exam is commonly called a “Full Body” exam and includes the following four tests:
  • The heart
  • The lungs
  • The abdomen and
  • The pelvic area

Your test results will be completely confidential.

Coronary Artery Disease Facts:
This disease kills more men and women than cancer and the next three diseases combined. More than 1.6 million people suffer heart attacks, over 30% fatally, every year as a result of coronary artery disease. 68% of these sudden heart attacks are in arteries that are less than 50% blocked and can not be detected with traditional nuclear stress testing. Traditional risk factor analysis by most doctors only account for 50% of heart attacks.

 The EBT heart scan can identify coronary artery disease as much as two decades before symptoms occur with an accuracy of 98-99%.

Radiation Facts:
The EBT Heart Scan has the lowest radiation available at 0.5 millisieverts. When compared with conventional CT, EBT is between 8 and 22 times less depending on the type of CT. 0.5 mSv is equal to 2 months of radiation from the sun or 8 round trip flights to CA. 

Lung Cancer Facts:
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. While correction officers are 2.5 times more likely to develop lung issues, 9/11 and other carcinogenic exposures have significantly exacerbated these statistics.

Electron Beam Tomography (EBT) Low-Dose Lung scanning is 10 times more sensitive than a regular chest X-ray, and can detect the early development of lung diseases. The current survival rate of lung cancer is 12-15%. Early detection of lung cancer with EBT scanning can potentially change the survival rate to greater than 88%. 

Abdomen and Pelvis Facts:
In the general population there is less disease found in these two areas. Given the conditions in which we work we have added these two tests. These two tests are used to identify early disease in those organs of your abdomen and pelvic area. 

The purpose of making this program available is to help you remain healthy.
